Finding a Couples Counselor From Hilton Head Island: Seven Practical Steps

A free local process guide for Hilton Head Island and the rest of Beaufort County, from CivilCouplesCounseling.

Step 1: Talk about why now

Before either of you searches, sit down for fifteen minutes and name what prompted this. It might be constant arguments about money, a move to the island that changed your roles, a new baby, or simply feeling distant. You do not need to agree on the cause. You only need to agree that you both want to try counseling and roughly what you hope to talk about.

Step 2: Choose a format you can keep

On Hilton Head, practical life shapes what is possible. Ask yourselves:

  • Can we both be free at the same time each week, even in summer?
  • Would video from home be easier than a trip to Bluffton or Beaufort?
  • Do we want one counselor for both of us, or are we open to separate sessions at times?

Write your answers down. They become your filter when you start reading profiles.

Step 3: Build a short list

Look through the directory listings for the Hilton Head area and pick three or four counselors whose descriptions match your format and concerns. Note whether each one sees couples regularly, offers video, and lists evening or weekend hours. Skip anyone who promises a particular result; nobody can promise how your relationship will go.

Step 4: Look up each license

South Carolina's counselor and marriage and family therapist licenses come from a single board under the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation. The board's page, cited below, links a public Licensee Lookup. Search each name on your list and read the result yourselves. This directory does not check credentials, so this is the step that tells you what the state's own record shows.

Step 5: Hold a consultation call with your top two

Many counselors offer a brief call before booking. Use it to ask:

1. How do you work with two people who see the problem differently? 2. What happens in the first session? 3. How long do couples usually stay in counseling with you? 4. What are your fees and cancellation rules? 5. If one of us travels or spends months off the island, can sessions continue by video?

Afterward, compare notes privately. Did you both feel comfortable? A good fit for one partner and a poor fit for the other is worth taking seriously.

Step 6: If a legal case is part of the picture, keep it separate

Some couples begin counseling while a separation or divorce is pending. For Hilton Head residents, those cases are heard by Beaufort County Family Court at 102 Ribaut Road in Beaufort, which lists divorce, support, alimony, and separation and maintenance among its cases. If you are handling forms without a lawyer, the South Carolina Judicial Branch's Self Help Resources page offers packets for simple divorce, support modification and visitation. Bring legal questions to the court or an attorney. Your counselor's role is the relationship, not the case.

Step 7: Book, then protect the time

Once you choose, book several sessions ahead if the counselor allows it, especially before the busy season starts. Put them in both calendars. Arrange childcare or a shift swap early. If sessions are in person, remember that drive times around the island and to the mainland are approximate and can stretch on busy days, so leave early.

After three or four sessions, check in with each other. Is the process useful? Is anything missing? It is fine to raise that with the counselor, and fine to try someone else if the fit is wrong.

Step 8: Decide together what comes next

At some point you and your counselor will talk about how often to meet or whether to pause. Make that decision together rather than letting sessions fade out during a busy month. Some couples taper to monthly check-ins; others stop and return later. Write down what you each found useful so you can come back to it, and keep the board lookup bookmarked in case you ever look for someone new. If you move off the island or spend part of the year elsewhere, ask the counselor before you go whether sessions can follow you or whether a referral makes more sense.

About this directory
