Looking for a counselor from North Port
Couples in North Port often come to counseling while juggling commutes, a house, work shifts and children all at once. When the two of you decide to sit down with someone, the first practical problem is usually distance and timing. The city is wide, and the courts and county offices mentioned below are up the road in Venice and Sarasota, so it makes sense to start by asking whether a counselor offers video sessions, evening times, or both.
This page lists independent counselors who serve the North Port area. The directory does not provide counseling and does not check anyone's credentials. It gives you a starting list, and the choosing is up to you.
Checking a counselor's Florida license
In Florida, the Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling oversees marriage and family therapists (LMFT), mental health counselors (LMHC) and clinical social workers (LCSW). The board's page, cited below, links to the Department of Health's public license search.
Before a first appointment, type the counselor's name into that search and compare what comes back with what the counselor told you. You are looking at the license type, the name on record and the status. It takes a few minutes and you can do it from the couch on a phone.
What to ask on the first call
A short phone call tells you a lot. Some questions couples in North Port tend to find useful:
- Do you see couples together, individuals, or both? How do you handle a session when only one partner can come?
- How long is a session, and how often do couples usually meet with you at the start?
- Do you offer video sessions, and are they available to clients anywhere in Florida?
- What hours do you keep? If either of you commutes out of town for work, an early-evening slot can matter more than anything else.
- How do you handle scheduling changes and cancellations?
Listen to how the counselor explains their approach in plain words. You are looking for someone you both feel comfortable talking to, not a sales pitch.
When separation is on the table
Sometimes couples come to counseling while also thinking about separating. Counseling and the court system are separate things, and it helps to know where the court-connected services are before you need them.
The Twelfth Judicial Circuit, which covers Sarasota County, runs a Family Mediation program. Its page explains that the program serves parties who already have an open court case, on issues such as parenting plans, child support, property division and alimony, and that a current Order of Referral signed by the judge is needed to take part. The Sarasota County office is at the Sarasota Justice Center, 2071 Ringling Blvd, Suite 614. The circuit is clear that the mediator has no decision-making authority; the role is to help the two parties work through the issues themselves.
The circuit's Family Division lists the South County Courthouse in Venice among its Sarasota County locations, alongside the Silvertooth Judicial Center and the Sarasota County Justice Center, with two South County family divisions. For a North Port household, Venice is the closer of those, roughly 25 to 30 minutes by car. Sarasota is roughly 45 minutes to an hour. Drive times here are approximate and depend on traffic and where in North Port you start.
If you want to understand forms or procedures, the circuit's Sarasota Self Help Center and Law Library is at 2002 Ringling Blvd., 1st Floor. It accepts walk-ins but strongly encourages appointments, which you can book online or by phone at (941) 861-8191. A counselor cannot answer questions about the law, so for questions about your own situation consider talking with an attorney.
Practical notes for North Port couples
Plan sessions around your real week. If one of you works in Sarasota and the other in North Port, a video session from two locations may be easier than meeting at an office. If you meet in person, ask about parking and whether the office is close to I-75, since getting off the interstate quickly can save time.
Give it a few sessions before deciding whether the fit is right. If it is not, it is fine to say so and try another counselor from the list.
