Looking for a couples counselor in Tallahassee
Partners in Tallahassee come to couples counseling from very different starting points. Some are newly married and still in school, some have been together for decades and are adjusting to an empty house, and some are trying to sort out how to share a home and a schedule after a move to the city for work. The directory introduces you to independent counselors; it does not provide sessions itself and does not check anyone's credentials, so the steps below are worth doing on your own.
The state board and its license search
In Florida, the Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling oversees marriage and family therapists (LMFT), mental health counselors (LMHC) and clinical social workers (LCSW). The board's page, cited below, links to the Department of Health's public license search.
Those three titles describe different training paths, and any of them may work with couples. What matters for you is that the person you book holds a current Florida license under the title they use. Type their full name into the Department of Health search before the first appointment and read the status shown. If something there is unclear, ask the counselor about it directly.
When the relationship is also a court case
Counseling and the legal process are separate tracks, but in Leon County they sometimes run side by side. If you and your partner have a family case open, the Second Judicial Circuit ADR Unit may become part of the picture. Its mediation FAQ says the unit provides mediation for many cases in county civil and family court, that a judge or magistrate may refer a family case to mediation, and that those referrals go to the ADR Unit at 301 South Monroe Street.
Mediation is not counseling. A mediator helps two people reach written agreements on practical matters; a counselor works with how the two of you communicate and relate. Some couples use both at different times. If you are in a case, tell your counselor so they understand the calendar you are working around, and keep your attorney or the court as the source for anything about the case itself.
The clerk's self-help center
The Leon County Clerk runs a Self Help Center that, according to its page, assists only with family law (excluding restraining orders), small claims and residential evictions. The clerk lists offices at the courthouse on South Monroe, a Northeast Branch on Metropolitan Boulevard and the Government Annex on Calhoun Street. If you have paperwork questions about a family filing, that is a public place to start. It is not a source of counseling or relationship advice.
Choosing a counselor who fits both of you
Couples counseling tends to go more smoothly when both people feel the counselor is fair to them. A few ways to get there:
- Book a short consultation call together if the counselor offers one, so neither partner meets them first alone.
- Ask how much of their week is spent with couples, as opposed to individuals.
- Ask how they handle a session where one partner wants to stop and the other wants to keep going.
- Ask what happens if one of you wants an individual session along the way.
There is no single right style. Some counselors give homework between sessions, others keep the work inside the room. Pick the approach both of you are willing to try for several weeks.
Practical logistics around town
Tallahassee is spread out, and two working partners may be coming from opposite sides of the city at the end of the day. A counselor near one partner's office, or one who offers video sessions, can make weekly appointments realistic. If you choose video, ask whether both of you need to be in the same room and whether the counselor is set up to see clients located in Florida. Early-morning and evening slots are often the first to fill, so ask about the waitlist when you call.
Before the first appointment
Agree between yourselves on one or two things you each want to work on. Check the license search. Confirm fees, cancellation rules and session length in writing. Then give it a few sessions before deciding whether the fit is right.
