How to use this guide
Picking a couples counselor is a shared decision, and that's part of what makes it hard. This guide breaks the process into steps you can take together over a week or two, using Alabama's board searches and a few local details from Madison County.
Step 1: Talk about why now
Before you search, sit down for twenty minutes and each answer one question: what would you like to be different in six months? Keep it concrete. "We stop having the same fight about chores" is more useful than "communicate better." Share your answers without debating them. You're gathering material for the first session, not settling anything.
Step 2: Agree on practical limits
Decide together how much you can spend per session, how often you can meet, and whether you'd prefer in-person, video, or either. Note any hard limits, like a partner who travels or evening childcare that ends at a certain hour. These limits will narrow your list faster than anything else.
Step 3: Build a short list
Use this directory to find three or four counselors who serve Huntsville. Read their profiles together. Look for people who describe couples work as a regular part of their practice and whose hours match what you agreed on in Step 2. Skip anyone whose schedule clearly won't fit, even if the profile sounds appealing.
Step 4: Look each counselor up with the right board
Alabama has two boards involved here. The Alabama Board of Examiners in Counseling oversees LPC, ALC and LPC-S counselors and offers a public Licensee Search. The Alabama Board of Examiners in Marriage and Family Therapy oversees LMFTs and offers a public License Roster Search. Match the letters after each name to the board, search the name, and note what you find. If you can't find someone, ask them which board to check.
Step 5: Make short calls
Most counselors will talk for a few minutes before you book. Decide who makes each call, or do them on speaker together. Ask:
1. How do you usually structure couples sessions? 2. Do you ever meet with partners one at a time? 3. How long and how frequent are sessions? 4. What is the fee, and what are the payment options? 5. What is your cancellation policy?
Write the answers on one sheet so you can compare side by side.
Step 6: Compare and choose
Lay out the answers and talk through them. Pay attention to how each of you felt on the call, not just to the facts. If one partner is uneasy about a counselor, take that seriously; counseling depends on both of you being willing to speak openly. Pick one, and agree that you'll reassess after three or four sessions.
Step 7: If separation is on the table
Some couples come to counseling while also weighing a divorce. If that's you, it can help to know where the county's family matters are handled. The Family Court Division of the Madison County Circuit Court is on the 8th floor, Room 821, and its page covers family court and divorce and child support, with forms such as a Domestic Relations Information Sheet. It also refers people to the Madison County Volunteer Lawyers Program and to Legal Services. Take legal questions there or to a lawyer, and use counseling sessions for the conversations between the two of you.
Step 8: Prepare for the first session
Bring the notes from Step 1. Arrive a few minutes early if you're meeting in person, or set up a quiet room with headphones for video. Expect the first session to be mostly about history and goals. Afterward, give each other a day before discussing how it went.
Step 9: Handle the in-between days
The days between sessions matter as much as the hour in the room. Agree on how you'll treat a topic that came up in session: will you leave it for next time, or keep talking at home? Some couples set a short weekly check-in of their own, at a set time, so hard topics don't spill into every evening.
Step 10: Check in with each other
After a handful of sessions, revisit the six-month question from Step 1. Are you moving toward it? If not, raise that with your counselor, or go back to your short list and try someone else. Changing counselors is a normal part of finding the right fit.
