Step 1: Talk about what you each want from counseling
Before searching, set aside half an hour with your partner. Each of you writes down two or three things you would like to be different in six months. Keep it concrete: fewer arguments about money, a calmer routine on school nights, more time together on weekends. Then compare lists. You do not need to agree on everything, but you should both be willing to show up.
Also decide what matters practically. Do you need evening slots? Is one of you more comfortable starting with video? Is there a budget you both accept? These answers will narrow the list quickly.
Step 2: Build a short list that fits the map
North Port covers a lot of ground, and offices are scattered across the county. Use the listings on this page to pick three or four counselors who serve the area. For each one, note whether they offer video, where their office is, and which days they work.
Think about the commute honestly. Venice is roughly 25 to 30 minutes from central North Port, and Sarasota is roughly 45 minutes to an hour, depending on traffic. These are approximate. A weekly drive that long can wear on a couple, so a closer office or a video option can make it easier to stick with the plan.
Step 3: Look up each counselor's license
In Florida, marriage and family therapists (LMFT), mental health counselors (LMHC) and clinical social workers (LCSW) fall under the Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage & Family Therapy and Mental Health Counseling. The board's page, cited below, links to the Department of Health's public license search.
Search each name on your list. Check that the name and license type match what the counselor told you, and note the status shown. Cross off anyone you cannot find.
Step 4: Make the first calls together
If you can, put the phone on speaker so both of you hear the answers. Ask:
1. Do you work with couples regularly, and what does a first session look like? 2. How long is each session, and how often would we meet at first? 3. Do you have evening or weekend availability? 4. What is your cancellation policy? 5. If we use video, what platform do you use, and can we join from two different places?
After each call, give each other a quick rating from one to five on comfort. Pick the counselor you both rated highest.
Step 5: Commit to a few sessions, then check in
Book three or four sessions before judging the fit. After that, sit down together and ask: Do we both feel heard? Are we practicing anything between sessions? If the answer is no, it is fine to try someone else from your list. Changing counselors is common and does not mean the effort was wasted; you will go into the next first session knowing more about what you both need. Keep your notes from Step 4 so you can return to your second choice without starting from scratch.
Step 6: Know the court-connected resources, in case you need them
Some couples decide to separate. If that happens and a case is opened, Sarasota County's court system has its own services, separate from counseling.
The Twelfth Judicial Circuit's Family Mediation program serves parties with open court cases, on matters such as parenting plans, child support, property division and alimony. It requires a current Order of Referral signed by the judge, and the circuit states that the mediator has no decision-making authority. The Sarasota County office is at the Sarasota Justice Center, 2071 Ringling Blvd, Suite 614.
For help with forms and procedures, the circuit's Sarasota Self Help Center and Law Library is at 2002 Ringling Blvd., 1st Floor. It takes walk-ins, but appointments are highly encouraged and can be booked online or by calling (941) 861-8191. Neither counselors nor this directory can answer questions about the law; an attorney is the right person for that.
About this directory
Civil Couples Counseling lists independent counselors serving North Port and the rest of southern Sarasota County. It does not provide counseling, and it does not check anyone's training or credentials. Use the license search in Step 3 and your own judgment when deciding who to see.
